Keeping with the trend and featuring many of our Jerk’s rides, I bring to you Nigel Nettar’s 1996 Toyota Chaser Avante! Nigel’s Chaser has been to me one of those cars that I always find something different on every time I see it – and his personal touches give it a unique personality. This car sure has a positive presence when driving around, it brings a smile to my face every time!

Now a bit of history on his number plate. It came from Nigel’s first serious car build, a 1986 Civic si turbo, back in 1997. In those days his first foray into car modifying came in the car audio form. The plate serves a dual meaning; ‘low frequency’ for the car audio and ‘low freak’ as a freak for all things low. Unfortunately the civic was written off in 2004 when it was rear ended by a speeding car, but the plates have lived on to make it onto the Chaser with the rear plate still being crumpled and buckled from the Civic crash – Nigel never straightened it deliberately as a reminder…

Ok, getting into the details – Nigel bought this Chaser after regretfully selling his 1986 Advan MarkII GX71, however being in no rush and knowing what he wanted, he saw this car sitting in a car yard and after waiting 6 MONTHS!! he managed to get it for a steal at only $8000! And with a genuine 86,000km on the clock! But this stock form was never going to last with the car in Nigel’s capable hands.

Soon after Nigel got the Chaser the modifying began, with power plant in mind he set his eyes on a 2jz out of an Aristo. One popping up on a local auction site, the watching began. The motor was bidded on and purchased over New Years whilst he was living it up in Gisborne for the Rhythm and Vines Music Festival, all on his trusty Nokia. Once purchased the swap happened at the infamous Garage Slipway over 3 weeks.

Filling the Chaser’s wheel arches are 18×9.5 +17 CST Hyper Zero rims all round. It used to sport some 17×9 +15 .Com wheels, however during a U-Turn the car got a little too sideways and kissed the curb, resulting in a smashed rim.

Oh yeah, this car is daily driven at this height! Not to mention Nigel’s told me about an epic trip where he once went from Auckland to Gisborne for a R’n’V One day’er, then back up to the Coromandel for Coro Gold for New Years! Commitment right there!

If you look closely you can see the custom JERK headlight film.

Around the Chaser there are some interesting and funny stickers and quotes.. Brian may like the tuna.. but “No one likes the tuna here..”

Crumpled rear number plate, just a way to reminisce about Nigel’s car roots. Check out those twin pipes! Thanks!

Of course the interior had to have some of Nigel’s fine personal touches! The shifting, courtesy of a colour changing crystal gear knob. Steering thanks to an OMP deep cone suede steering wheel. Plus a few extra gadgets!

And here is the heart of this majestic Chaser, the beautiful 2JZ – 3 litres, 6 cylinders and 2 turbos of raw power! This motor has been dyno’d at 224rwkw on the stock 10psi of boost. Custom intercooler piping, professionally coated to last and incorporating HKS’ signature SSQV blow off valve and HKS intake filter. The car also has a custom twin 2.5″ down pipes off the turbo’s running into a custom 3″ straight through exhaust, plenty of room to exhale!

Leaving you with a gorgeous ass shot of the Chaser, Nigel still has some tricks up his sleeve. a “Rush” body kit from Japan is in the cards as well as a re-tune to make some power out of the 2jz motor. Then he’ll to continue to enjoy it!
